Below is an overview of the conditions I specialise in. I have a musculoskeletal background so can also treat a range of conditions that are not listed below.
As a mother, I have first-hand experience of how wonderful and life affirming yet sometimes lonely and difficult pregnancy and recovery following childbirth can be. With all the focus and energy of health practitioners directed towards our newborns, mothers can be left feeling depleted and confused by conflicting advice, with little time to navigate any unexpected hurdles.
As an experienced therapist, through my tried and tested treatments, I will help you feel confident that you can recover and thrive again.
Below are the conditions I commonly see which can be treated successfully with physiotherapy, no matter what type of delivery you have had:
1 in every 3 women are affected by women’s health problems over their lifetime, often during pregnancy or postnatally, and becoming more noticeable around the menopause. However, except in the most serious cases, it is very unlikely that surgery ever needs to be considered and in truth, the NICE guidelines recommend supervised pelvic floor training as the first option for women with conditions such as Pelvic Organ Prolapse (a bulging feeling in the vagina), and Stress or Urge Incontinence (uncontrolled leaking from the bladder or bowel).
To assess the pelvic floor muscle integrity, and for you to recruit the best technique when exercising, you may need an internal examination on your first appointment. This will be explained in detail and you will be able to sign a consent form prior to the assessment.
Below are the conditions I commonly see which can be treated effectively with physiotherapy:
I was taught the Pilates Method at Ballet school, and then went on to train at the Pilates Foundation to become a teacher towards the end of my dancing career. Over the years I have taught students with varying abilities, including the more athletic in dance companies, (New Adventures) and dance colleges (London Studio Center, Royal Ballet Upper School). As a physio, I have taught in the clinical rehabilitation setting of outpatients and inpatients within a hospital setting in one to one and group sessions. These patients have been ante and postnatal women, patients recovering post surgery and patients with musculoskeletal conditions.
Everyone benefits from Pilates as it improves posture, muscle tone, balance, and joint mobility. Being a meditative discipline, and through the use of breathe and movement flow, Pilates can be very effective at relieving stress and tension.
Following a postural assessment, I will be able to provide you with an individually tailored programme and give you 1:1 attention so that you can exercise effectively, and launch yourself safely back into your favourite exercise discipline or simply start something completely new.
A Mummy MOT is a 60 minute, specialist postnatal examination for women following both vaginal and caesarean deliveries.
It will assess how your posture, pelvic floor and stomach muscles are recovering after birth.
It is the best thing to do to know exactly where you’re at.
Initial consultation is from 6 weeks postnatal and includes:
All babies are welcome, we can work around feeds and changes etc., please let me know in advance if possible so that I can allow for a little extra time.
What to Expect
Training Points is situated on Coopers Yard, just off Westow Hill, on the Triangle. My therapy room is private and tranquil, situated on the 1st floor, where there is plenty of space to bring a little one (buggies are left in a sheltered, visible space outside the building). There is a toilet facility and changing mat as required.
An initial assessment may last up to 60 minutes and involves firstly listening to your experience and concerns in detail, taking down all relevant medical history and any current medication, followed by a physical examination. An explanation of my findings and number of further appointments needed will always be discussed at the initial assessment.
